GET LOST PETS HOME!

Microchip Scanning Station Instructions

Welcome to the Feral Heroes Microchip Scanning Station! This station is provided to help reunite lost pets with their owners. Follow the steps below to check if a pet has a microchip and retrieve contact information for their owner.

  • Step One: Scan for microchip.
  • Hold the scanner close to the pet’s body and move it slowly.
  • Start scanning from the pet’s shoulders and move down along the spine.
  • Sweep from side to side and over the neck, chest, and legs.
  • If no chip is detected, try scanning again from a different angle.
  • Always scan the pet multiple times to ensure no chip is missed.

  • Step Two: If the pet has a microchip, make note of the number by snapping a quick photo of the scanner's results.
  • Look up the microchip number on AAHA microchip lookup to see the microchip company the chip originated from. Go to the website and enter chip # or call the company and ask for them to contact the owner.

  • Step Three: If the pet does not have a microchip or the above steps don't quickly lead to reunification, hold on to the pet for at least 72 hours.
  • If you are unable to do so, call your local Animal Control or Non-Emergency # & ask them to pick up the animal.
  • Pets don’t typically wander too far from home, so the chances are that someone is looking for them close to where they were found.
  • Spread the word in your neighborhood apps and social media.
  •  Post a picture/description on the local lost and found website Report and Search Lost and Found Pets | Petco Love Lost. It uses FACE RECOGNITION and will search local next-door and Facebook posts and compare photos and send out alerts.
    •  Download and edit a found cat/dog flyer: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vqa7LR5K9oPCMJvBW9HoK_Cz3Re1lXYTVEqMoXC9Q9M/edit?usp=sharin

  • Step Four: Return the microchip scanner to the station and lock the box.

Disclaimer This scanning station does not guarantee the identification or return of a lost pet. If no chip is found, please take the pet to a veterinarian for further scanning, as some chips may not be detected by all scanners.
